How to Break 90 in Golf

Shooting in the 80s consistently rarely takes a new swing. It takes fewer wasted strokes, smarter decisions, and practice aimed at the parts of your game that actually cost you.

What Breaking 90 Actually Requires

On a par-72 course, 89 is 17 over par. You can make bogey on every hole and add one par — or mix in a few pars to leave room for the occasional double. You don't need birdies. You need to avoid the 7s and 8s.

Most golfers stuck in the 90s already hit enough good shots to break 90. What holds them back is a handful of holes where one mistake turns into two or three.

Stop Giving Away Easy Strokes

  • Penalties — out-of-bounds and water balls cost at least a stroke each, often two.
  • Poor decisions — the hero shot through the trees that finds another tree.
  • Three-putts — a few per round quietly add up to several strokes.
  • Short-game mistakes — chunked chips and bladed pitches that leave you still off the green.
  • Two shots in a bunker — or leaving it in altogether.

Remove even half of these and many golfers are already in the 80s.

Improve Your Course Management

  • Take trouble out of play off the tee. If driver brings out-of-bounds or water into range, hit a club you can keep in play.
  • Aim for the middle of the green. Ignore flags tucked near hazards.
  • Play long par 4s as par 5s. Two comfortable shots and a wedge is a fine plan.
  • Get out of trouble in one. From the trees, chip back to the fairway.
  • Club up. Most amateur approach shots finish short of the target.

Build a Practice Plan Around Your Weaknesses

Practice time is limited, so spend most of it on the area costing you the most strokes, not the club that's most fun to hit. A simple weekly golf practice plan with one or two priorities beats an unfocused bucket of balls.

Track the Right Statistics

At this level, a few numbers explain most of the gap: penalty strokes, doubles-or-worse, three-putts, and up-and-down attempts. Our list of golf stats to track shows how to record them, and our golf statistics guide explains how to read them over time.

Improve Your Approach Shots

You don't need to hit lots of greens to break 90 — you need approaches that finish on or near the green, not in hazards. Know your real carry distance with each club, aim at the fat part of the green, and favor the side with the easiest miss.

Get Better Around the Green

Getting the ball onto the putting surface in one shot from just off the green saves more strokes than almost anything else. Use the simplest shot available: putt when you can, chip when you can't putt, and pitch only when you have to.

Make Fewer Three-Putts

Most three-putts come from poor speed on long putts, not missed short ones. Practice lag putting from 30 feet and beyond, with the goal of leaving the ball inside a few feet of the hole — then hole the short ones.

Set Round-Based Goals

  • No more than one penalty stroke.
  • No triple bogeys.
  • Zero or one three-putt.
  • Every trouble shot back to the fairway in one.

Process goals like these keep you focused during the round, and hitting them tends to take care of the score.

Use Data to Find Your Biggest Opportunities

Over several rounds, patterns show up that one bad hole hides: maybe penalties cost more than putting, or chips cost more than drives. Recording rounds with golf shot tracking turns guesses into evidence, so you work on what matters most first.

How Givo Can Help You Track Your Progress

Givo records your rounds and turns them into trends over time, so you can see whether penalties, short game, or putting are holding you back. It suggests personalized practice drills based on those patterns and gives on-course club and shot recommendations using distance, wind, and your shot history. Elevation isn't included yet — it's on the roadmap.
