Yardages & course data

A Golf GPS Built for More Than Yardages

Know the course. Understand your game. Play with a plan.

A golf GPS app tells you how far the flag is. That's the beginning of a decision, not the end of one — the useful part is turning that information, along with what you know about your own game, into a club and a plan for the shot in front of you.

What Is a Golf GPS App?

A golf GPS app uses your phone's location and mapped course data to show distances on the hole you're playing — usually to the front, middle, and back of the green, plus hazards, doglegs, and layup targets. Your device works out where you are using satellite positioning, and the app measures from there to points on its map of the course.

The reason golfers carry one is decision quality. Standing over the ball, the question is rarely "how far to the green" — it's "what do I hit from here, and what happens if I miss it." Yardages are the input. The value is a better choice made with more confidence.

More Than Front, Middle and Back

Basic yardages were the first job of golf technology, and they still matter. But a number on its own leaves the hard part to you: which of those distances is the one to play for, and whether your game supports taking on the carry in front of you.

That's where connecting course information with performance data changes things. When the yardage is held alongside your own numbers — what you actually hit, where you tend to miss, which part of the game costs you the most — the same position produces a different answer for you than for the player beside you on the same tee.

Givo's Golf GPS Experience

In Givo the course is where the round starts: you select your course and begin playing, and the app knows where you are on it. From there, distance to the pin is combined with conditions like wind and your own shot history to recommend a club — and you can ask in plain language mid-round instead of tapping through menus.

Location is used when you use features that need it, and Givo doesn't require continuous background location access for those features. Elevation isn't part of the recommendations yet; it's on our roadmap. Givo is in Early Access, launching first on iPhone, with Android to follow at a later launch.

40,000+ Golf Courses

Givo works at 40,000+ courses worldwide. Coverage is the first thing to check about any golf app, because a GPS tool is only useful if the courses you actually play are in it — which matters most if you play at more than one club, travel for golf, or like the odd away day.

It's worth confirming your own regular courses before you rely on any of them, ours included. If you play a mix of venues, coverage is the difference between a tool you use every week and one you open once.

GPS + Performance Tracking

Course information and shot tracking are two halves of the same loop. The GPS tells you what the shot asked for; tracking records what you gave it — the club, the result, where the ball finished. Kept together, they make each other useful.

Because the two line up, you can go back and ask better questions: which clubs you're actually hitting well this season, whether you leave yourself longer first putts than you think, whether laying up is paying off on your long par fours. That's the difference between a round you remember and a round you learn from. Golf shot tracking covers what's worth capturing, and golf statistics how to read what comes back.

Built for Golfers Who Want to Improve

Givo is built for golfers who already take the game seriously — roughly a 15 handicap to scratch. The people who know that a three-putt and a whiffed wedge are different problems, and would rather practice the one costing them more.

If you're working on breaking 90, the biggest gains are usually decisions: penalties, risky carries, the par five you should have laid up on — how to break 90 follows that path. If a first sub-80 is the goal, the work shifts toward distance control and saving pars, which how to break 80 goes through in more detail.

It's a tool to support your game, not a replacement for a coach, and it can't guarantee lower scores. What it does is make the information you already produce on the course usable — see AI golf caddie for how the recommendations are made.
